Kyle Shines At Annual British Indoor Championships

08 January 2016

THREE of Coventry Cycle Speedway Club’s rising stars shone at the annual British Indoor Championships last weekend at the Sports Connexion in Ryton-on-Dunsmore.

Kyle Roberts, Daniel Drewett and Mason Phillips all starred at the two-day fiesta which saw hundreds of riders, officials and visitors from across the nation descend on the venue.

Roberts, who rose to stardom in 2014 – though missed the 2015 season due to a motor Speedway accident, announced he was back on the scene with a sensational silver medal finish in the British Under 16s final – despite an exclusion in his opening ride.

The 16-year-old won his remaining four races to finish second behind the promising Will Tidball from Exeter.

The Bretford-based rider looked to be back to his best and admitted he missed his Cycle Speedway racing in 2015.

He added: “I have been attempting to break into motor Speedway.

“It’s great to be involved again with all my friends at Coventry Cycle Speedway and I can confirm I will be racing for the club in the Elite League in 2016.”

Fellow teenager Daniel Drewett, from Coundon, raised eyebrows and qualified for the British Open Final – ahead of several more fancied, experienced, riders.

Although the 18-year-old struggled, as expected, Drewett’s first senior national final proved a learning curve and signs of a major breakthrough at the Elite level were clear.

Mason Phillips, in his first Indoor campaign, was a model of impressive consistency in the British Under 19s Final.

The Rugby based 17-year-old reeled off five straight second places to finish on 15 points – just missing out of a podium placing.
